DESCRIPTION
This Microcredential prepares individuals to work within the field of human services
focusing on non-biased system collaboration, personal growth, and ethics. Students
will learn to identify and enforce appropriate boundaries and ethics while advocating
for those they serve. They will develop an understanding of their theoretical and
philosophical orientation while improving their empathy and rapport-building skills.
Students will identify and decrease their own biases while understanding the biases
and goals of existing societal institutions.

- Define and critically analyze the primary social institutions in society: family, religion, economy, education, government, healthcare, and media.
- Analyze and understand educational institutions, tracking, ability grouping, educational inequalities, and the impact of socioeconomic status on educational attainment.
- Analyze how social classes’ access to resources impacts opportunities.
- Analyze different family structures and their variations across cultures to better understand family violence and social policy issues.
- Articulate how access to healthcare impacts health disparities in society.
- Articulate and analyze power dynamics in institutions and how they impact society.
- Describe how to experientially challenge one’s worldview in the context of society using sociological theories and research.
- Articulate theoretical orientation, identify strengths in working with others, and create a plan to increase skills in areas of personal growth. This will include an ongoing plan to manage the stress of working in the human services field.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, including rapport building, conflict resolution, assertiveness, active listening, and interviewing.
- Display appropriate boundaries, professionalism, and ethics while working with others in the human services field.
- Explain the impact of group and family dynamics on individual development and treatment.
