NWACC Makes College Possible for Hispanics and Latinos

Estudiantes Hispanos

Whether you’re the first in your family to attend college or returning to obtain a degree or job training, NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) offers the support, resources and academic pathways to reach your higher education goals.

With 22% of the college’s student population identifying as Hispanic, NWACC staff and faculty understand the barriers that can make it challenging to access a college education, including the admission process, affording tuition, meeting English proficiency requirements, choosing a degree path, and finding your place at a new school.

NWACC’s mission is to make college accessible to everyone, no matter their immigration status. All undocumented and DACA students are eligible and invited to apply. Many DACA students can qualify for in-state tuition, and DACA and undocumented students are also eligible for most NWACC scholarships, lowering the cost of attending school.

NWACC’s Office of Hispanic Initiatives plays a vital role when navigating college by offering students and parents numerous resources. The office assists with enrolling in classes, obtaining financial aid, applying for scholarships, connecting to academic help, and getting involved on campus.

Current high school students are invited to attend NWACC’s LIFE program where they’ll spend three empowering days on campus to learn how to transition from high school graduates to college freshman, connect with college-age mentors and make life-long friends. Students learn how to prepare for college, navigate the application process, and apply for financial assistance, and leave with the confidence to enroll and succeed in college.

For those looking to earn a high school diploma, improve English-speaking skills or obtain American citizenship, NWACC’s Adult Education offers General Educational Development (GED), English for Language Learners (ELL) and American citizenship courses for free.

Current NWACC students who need to advance their English vocabulary and grammar can take NWACC’s English for College and Career courses, which aid in overall success throughout their time in college and when gaining employment.

Whether students plan to earn a certificate or degree, pursue job training, or transfer on to earn a bachelor’s degree, NWACC offers an accessible path. Programs range from science, math, health professions, business, computer information, culinary arts, graphic design and more.

With over 20 clubs, NWACC makes it easy to make new friends, advance skills and grow outside the classroom. Clubs include areas such as art, speech, music, nursing and others. The Latin Culture Club in particular offers students the opportunity to celebrate their Latin culture, volunteer, and educate others on issues that affect the Latino community.
