Medical Assisting Program
The Medical Assisting Program at NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) prepares students to become skilled, compassionate, and competent healthcare professionals in a variety of clinical and administrative settings. Designed to meet the growing demand for qualified medical assistants, this comprehensive program blends classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory training and real-world clinical experience.
Students in the program develop the knowledge and technical skills necessary to support physicians and other healthcare providers in clinics, physician offices, and outpatient facilities. Instruction emphasizes both clinical and administrative competencies to ensure graduates are workforce-ready upon completion.
Throughout the course, students will learn to:
- Accurately measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure
- Perform basic clinical procedures such as phlebotomy and specimen collection
- Administer injections and assist with minor office procedures
- Conduct patient intake, documentation, and electronic health record (EHR) management
- Apply principles of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Practice infection control and OSHA safety standards
- Schedule appointments, manage medical records, and handle billing and coding basics
- Communicate effectively and professionally with patients and healthcare teams
Emphasis is placed on patient-centered care, ethical standards, and professionalism to ensure graduates represent NWACC and the medical assisting profession with excellence.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for a nationally recognized certification examination, positioning them for employment and advancement in the healthcare field.
