2014 Keynote Speaker
Dr. Sanford “Sandy” Shugart, President of Valencia College will open Celebrate Learning for Faculty with a keynote address as titled above. Valencia serves 70,000 students per year, and is known for high rates of graduation, transfer, and job placement and has become something of a national laboratory for best practices in learning-centered education. Prior to Valencia, Dr. Shugart served as president of North Harris College and as Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of the North Carolina Community College System.
His Ph. D. is in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to his career in education, Dr. Shugart is a published poet and songwriter and author of Leadership in the Crucible of Work: Discovering the Interior Life of an Authentic Leader.
Description: Celebrate Learning for Faculty is a faculty-led in-service where faculty present workshops for their colleagues on topics that model best practices in learning-centered education. Although full-time faculty is required to attend, part-time faculty is welcomed and encouraged to attend. It is designed as a mini-conference with multiple sessions offered in each time slot and the faculty may choose which session would best fit their development needs. Snacks are provided at break times to encouraged further discussion on session topics and provide networking opportunities college-wide. In addition, this event is a vehicle for faculty who have been awarded faculty development funds to share what they learned helping keep all faculty current.
