Experience the best of Athens and the Greek islands with NWACC World History Professor and traveler Dr. Sevin Gallo and friends. Join Dr. Gallo in adventures around Athens, Crete, Santorini, and Naxos Island, from walking tours, beautiful beaches, Greek dancing and a catamaran boat tour, to visiting the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon and the Minoan Palace of Knossos.

Trip dates: June 17 - June 28, 2020


12-Day Trip Itinerary: June 17-28, 2020

DAY 1: June 17

  • Depart USA for Athens, Greece
  • Arrange your own flight (airfare not included)

DAY 2 : June 18


  • Airport transfer to hotel in central Athens, check in, relax and refresh. The group is staying in Syntagma Square.
  • Take a neighborhood walking tour and become familiar with the neighborhood, public transportation, nearby pharmacies, markets, ATMs, etc.
  • Program orientation dinner with live Greek music and dancing. Experience authentic Greek meze appetizers, salads, large family-style sharing platters of grilled meats and seafood, and a simple dessert. Red and white wine are included.

DAY 3: June 19


  • Breakfast and day briefing
  • Explore the the Plaka neighborhood
  • Walk in the footsteps of the ancients with a guided tour of the Acropolis
  • Break for a snack/lunch at the foot of the Acropolis where there are many cafes
  • Group tour of the Acropolis Museum, which is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world
  • Free afternoon - Visit the Agoras, shopping, resting, etc.
  • Cooking class and tasting menu at Meliartos. The chefs and owners source their products strictly from farmers and artisans in Greece and present each dish. They'll discuss its history, ingredients and techniques, culminating in an unmatched culinary experience.
  • Optional night out in Athens

DAY 4: June 20

Cape Sounion:

  • Breakfast and day briefing with rooftop Acropolis view
  • Set out on excursion to Cape Sounion, known by ancient Greeks as the “Sacred Cape”.
  • Travel along the scenic coastline and Saronic Gulf 
  • Tour the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion
  • Lunch at a local seaside tavern (not included in the program price)
  • Afternoon swim and relaxation at Lake Vouliagmeni, a special mineral rich spa cut into the awe-striking cliffs.
  • Bus transfer to the Port of Piraeus
  • Dinner at the Port (not included in the program fee)
  • Board the ferry for the overnight trip to Chania, Crete. The ferry has several food kiosks/cafeterias, and a full bar as well as sleeping cabins. 


DAY 5: June 21


  • Arrive in the picturesque town of Chania on the Island of Crete
  • Breakfast in Chania and historical walking tour of the old town/port
  • Olive estate tour and tasting
  • Group lunch at a taverna in the village near the estate (included in the program fee)
  • Check into our beach front hotel/store bags if the rooms are not ready
  • Relax at the beach or explore the neighborhood
  • Dinner on your own

DAY 6: June 22


  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Relax at the beach or rest at the hotel. Check out at noon.
  • Lunch in the charming town of Rethymno
  • Afternoon bus ride to Heraklion
  • Tour the Minoan Palace of Knossos
  • Check into hotel
  • Evening open to explore the largest town in Crete


DAY 7: June 23

Crete & Santorini:

  • Breakfast at the hotel and check out of your room
  • Late morning ferry to Santorini
  • Arrive in Santorini
  • Bus transfer to hotel, check in
  • Walking tour of the main town of Fira
  • Dinner on your own in town

DAY 8: June 24


  • Depart for luxurious catamaran boat tour
  • Enjoy a five-hour day cruise. It will start from Amoudi Bay or Athinios port. First stop will be at the hot springs, sail past Aspronisi, an ancient light house, Akrotiri and Indian Rock.
  • Visit White & Red Beach for swimming
  • Lunch is served on board (full barbeque menu, unlimited drinks, snorkeling equipment, wifi included). * Guests need to bring towels
  • Return to hotel to relax and refresh
  • Evening on your own to explore. Recommended sunset dinner in picturesque Oia.


DAY 9: June 25

Naxos Island:

  • Breakfast at hotel and check out of your room
  • Bus transfer to port
  • Late morning ferry to Naxos Island
  • Check into hotel, relax and refresh. Feel free to explore Agios Georgios Beach and/or visit the ancient Temple of Demeter
  • Explore Naxos town, and enjoy dinner on your own

DAY 10: June 26

Naxos Island:

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Pick up and ride into mountainous villages of Naxos
  • Cheese farm tour
    • Tour a small home and cheese farm to experience traditional life and modern farming
    • Observe and participate in the cheese-making process
    • Taste local cheese delicacies
  • Winery tour
    • Visit a small family winery and study the wine-making process
    • Learn about the different Aegean grape varieties and the history of wine-making in Greece
    • Taste local food delicacies and local wine around the family table


DAY 11: June 27

Naxos Island and Athens:

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Relaxing morning in Naxos
  • Afternoon ferry back to Athens
  • Transfer from port, and check into hotel
  • Farewell dinner at A for Athens’ rooftop and Acropolis views (included in program)


Day 12: June 28

  • Breakfast and day briefing
  • Airport transfer
  • Return to USA from Athens, Greece



Additional Information:

For our NWACC Foundation community trips abroad, you are not required to be an NWACC student or employee. It's open to the public.

Enjoy ten nights accommodations, reserved adventures (Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Temple of Poseidon, Lake Vouliagmeni and Palace of Knossos), tours, tastings, classes, airport transfers, in-country transportation as scheduled, daily breakfasts and six group meals.

  • Please note: Program rates are per person based on double occupancy. Single occupancy availability is limited.

Of the total cost for the 10-day trip to Greece, $200 will go toward study abroad scholarship opportunities for NWACC students. This $200 qualifies as a tax deductible donation.

Be sure and check that your passport is current at least 6 months after the end date of this trip. If it expires sooner, you must get it renewed.

  • Deposit payment of $500 due on Jan. 10, 2020 (nonrefundable)
  • Payment of $700 due Feb. 10, 2020
  • Payment of $700 due March 10, 2020
  • Payment of $700 due April 10, 2020
  • Final payment of $380 due by May 10, 2020

  • International airfare
  • Passport fees
  • Some meals and drinks noted as not included within the above trip intinerary
  • Souvenirs
  • Taxis or entrances to sites visited during free-time

Dr. Sevin Gallo is a World History Professor and Global Studies Degree Coordinator at NWACC. She leads study abroad programs to Turkey, Greece and soon to Spain and Morocco. Her passion is bringing historical understanding to bear on what she thinks are the most thrilling aspects of life---travel, good food and drinks, dancing and the arts, and generally experiencing as much diversity as humanly possible.
