The Melba Shewmaker Southern Region National Child Protection Training Center

NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) is serving as the first of only four regional partners of the National Child Protection Training Center, dedicated to eradicating child abuse in the United States within three generations.

The Southern Region National Child Protection Training Center at NWACC serves current and future child protection professionals in a 16-state region, teaching all mandated reporters, teachers, social workers, counselors, law enforcement officers, first responders, health professionals, attorneys, and members of our judicial and childcare systems to Recognize, Report, and Respond to child abuse and maltreatment. NorthWest Arkansas Community College has already implemented courses and curriculum for students on its campus and will be a resource for other colleges and universities in the region.

Since 2010, the Southern Region National Child Protection Training Center has been operating without dedicated lab facilities, yet has still trained thousands of child protection students and professionals. However, with community support, this does not have to be the case for much longer.  The NWACC Foundation is presently raising $3 million to transform the former Highlands Oncology Clinic building, adjacent to the NWACC campus, into a state-of-the-art, "laboratory like" training facility to support this programming.  This hands-on training facility will feature a two-story mock home, mock courtrooms, child forensic interview rooms, practice medical exam rooms, interactive video capabilities and flexible use spaces to train child abuse professionals with the latest techniques to identify and eliminate child abuse situations. It will also serve as a resource for numerous organizations throughout the region that have similar child abuse eradication goals.
