MATH AND SCIENCE CLASSES WILL BE DETERMINED BY SKILL SET AND SCHOOL MATHEMATICS LEVEL

Program Manager’s book assignment (All students) Lyndon Johnson and the Great Society
Communications:The speech classes this summer will concentrate on public speaking and advocating for the Upward Bound and all Trio programs. I would like to film the speeches and put them on YouTube as well as try to get some government representatives as an audience. They will need to discuss what Trio is, how it has affected them and other students like themselves, as well as how budget cuts will harm these programs. We might want to break topics up by grades. I feel this will be beneficial in the crusade to keep Trio programs funded. We will also send a copy of the speeches to all Arkansas reps as well as high level government officials all the way to the president. Students will need to research Trio programs who they serve as well as the fiscal impact of removing educational programs such as Trio. Speeches will be presented the last week of the summer program.

Math/Computer Science:The math class will focus on grade specific skillset mathematics. A list of next academic year math classes has been collected to determine placement of math science classes. The computer Science classes will focus on a variety of computer skills. The Upward Bound program has purchased 4 Raspberry Pi single board computers that are designed specifically to promote the teaching of basic computer science. With these devices students will be able to investigate the inner workings of a CPU as well as learn how operating systems are used on electronic devices.

Language Arts:In the Language arts class this summer, underclassmen will focus on grammar reading and sentence structure, tools needed to prepare for higher level writing and comp courses. This course is designed to give the Upward Bound underclassmen a leg up in their next year’s English class. The incoming seniors will focus on writing essays, educational papers, and formal letters. The senior class will also be introduced to writing manuals which will include all scholarly styles of writing such as APA, MLA, and Chicago style.

Science: Science this summer will focus on sustainability. Students will study and explore the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing, which has ecological, economic, political and cultural dimensions. Healthy ecosystems and environments are necessary to the survival and flourishing of humans and other organisms. There are a number of major ways of reducing negative human impact on environments which will be investigated by the students. Students will be given a $20 budget to create a sustainability project and present their project at the summer conclusion on August 2, 2013.

Foreign Language: This summer the Upward Bound program will be introduced to the Arab culture. As a culture that is not well known to western world, the Upward Bound participants will learn some basic Arabic, learn some Arab traditions, and study some Arab nations. This is a foreign language and cultural awareness class.
Off campus trips this summer are designed to promote cultural opportunities as well as educational avenues that the students may have not known about.
