Emergency Response Procedures


WEATHER CANCELLATIONS
  1. The President of the College or her designate is responsible for the orderly conduct of college schedules and activities during inclement weather.
  2. Notices of cancellation of classes and/or other activities will be released through the appropriate NWACC personnel to local television and radio stations for broadcast.
  3. Cancellations of daytime classes are normally announced by no later than 5:300 A.M. of the day morning classes are being cancelled or 2:30 pm of the day evening classes are being cancelled..

BOMB THREAT  

A. When a bomb threat is received the person receiving the call should record the following minimum information if at all possible.

  • Time the threat call was received.
  • Location of the bomb.
  • Threat message content.
  • What type of bomb is it?
  • When will it go off?
  • When was it put in place?
  • Any other details.
  • Name, location and phone number of person receiving the call.

B. IMMEDIATELY upon termination of the threat call, call 911 and notify the Public Safety Department at 619-4229.

C. The Public Safety Department will contact the appropriate emergency services and coordinate response measures with them.

D. Should evacuation of the effected facility be necessary due to a bomb threat, the Public Safety Department or the College Administration will initiate such evacuation using the fire alarm system, power horns, or direct personal contact.


SEVERE WEATHER  

The sounding of the public warning sirens constitutes official and immediate notice to move to a place of shelter. No additional confirmation is required. Go to the nearest place of shelter immediately.       

  1. Supplemental notification will be provided by the College using other methods of communication.
  2. Established safe areas are marked by signing. Faculty and staff are expected to know the locations of suchshelters in their areas, and to coordinate the movement of students from class to shelter.
  3. Persons leaving the building rather than taking shelter do so at their own risk. Students under the age of 18  should be prevented from leaving if possible.
  4. Any NWACC personnel present should make every effort to insure that people do not gather in locations with large glass areas or where falling structures might cause personal harm.
  5. In the event of a severe weather warning, Public Safety Department or Physical Plant personnel will disable the elevator to prevent its use.

ACCIDENT/ INJURY OR ILLNESS
  • If the injury appears to be very minor and the person declines medical attention, they should be directed to the First Aid Kit nearby in their area.
  • For more serious and life-threatening situations, IMMEDIATELY CALL 9-1-1.
  • After calling 9-1-1, IMMEDIATELY notify the Public Safety Department at 619-4229.
  • Give emergency first aid only IF QUALIFIED .
  • Keep victim(s) calm, and as comfortable as possible, and protected until arrival of qualified emergency personnel.
  • Make a written record for the Public Safety Department of any

FIRE/ EXPLOSION 

A. Burns Hall or Shewmaker Center.

Any person discovering a fire or explosion in Burns Hall or Shewmaker Center should IMMEDIATELY :

  • Activate the nearest fire alarm pull-station. The alarm will automatically be communicated to the Bentonville, and Rogers fire departments.
  • Notify the Public Safety Department at 619-4229.
  • Evacuate the building. Follow evacuation procedures. Assist any injured or disabled persons, and move to a safe assembly areas well away from the building(s).

B. All other NWACC facilities:

Any person discovering a fire or explosion in any other NWACC facility should IMMEDIATELY:

  • Call 9-1-1. The local fire departments will respond.
  • Notify the Public Safety Department at 619-4229.
  • Evacuate the facility. Assist any injured or disabled persons, and move to a safe assembly area well away from the building(s).

NATURAL GAS LEAK
  1. IMMEDIATELY extinguish all open flames and/or other sources of heat.
  2. IF TRAINED TO DO SO , activate the emergency gas shut-off switches located in the effected area.
  3. Activate the fire alarm.
  4. Notify the Public Safety Department at 619-4229.
  5. Evacuate the building

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL NORMAL ACTIVITIES BE RESUMED UNTIL AND UNLESS THE "ALL CLEAR" HAS BEEN GIVEN BY AUTHORIZED COLLEGE OFFICIAL ( eg. Cabinet Member or Director of Public Safety Department ).
