SIFE to present Exchange Rate Coloring Book to children
Presentations at Rogers, Bentonville libraries
BENTONVILLE (Tuesday, October 23, 2007) – The NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will host its fourth annual Exchange Rate Coloring Book session 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Rogers Public Library and again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Bentonville Public Library.
“SIFE team members discovered several years ago that many elementary school children do not know that there are differences in currency used in other countries and that many customs in other countries are different as well,” said Becky Hudson, NWACC SIFE Advisor. “SIFE members worked to develop a bilingual coloring book that teaches children the differences in currency between Mexico and the United States. The book also shows children cultural differences between the two countries.”
The coloring book tells the story of Jessica, a young American girl who travels to Mexico to spend time with her friend Jose and his family, Hudson said.
“While there, Jose celebrates his birthday and Jessica, while trying to purchase Jose’s birthday present, discovers that her money is different than that of the storekeepers,” she said. “Children enjoy the story as SIFE students read the book in both Spanish and English while other team members will act out the story in a skit.”
Hudson said games geared towards learning the differences in currency exchange are played to better help children retain this information.
After story time is over, children have time to work in the coloring book and discuss currency and cultural differences with SIFE members.
Each child receives a coloring book, crayons, and bookmark that show the current currency exchange rates.
“This is a great time for children to learn while they have fun,” Hudson said.
