Retail Management to celebrate May 15

BENTONVILLE (Thursday, May 1, 2008) – The Retail Management program at NWACC will recognize 19 students who have reached their first milestone by completing the general education required courses for the Associates of Applied Science degree in Business Management.

Program officials will host a ceremony 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in the Wal-Mart Auditorium at the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies.

NWACC President Dr. Becky Paneitz introduced on October 9, 2007, the program, funded by the Wal-Mart Family Foundation to provide retail management educational opportunities to not only Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates, but also other retailers both regionally and nationally.

“The program has been uniquely designed to help students obtain a college degree, one certificate at a time,” said Margie Vance, program director.

Students complete the required 15-16 hours in general education, followed by two certificates – one in Business Management, 27 hours, and the other in Retail Management, 21 hours.

Students are awarded the Associates of Applied Science degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Retail upon completion.

The Retail Management program’s main goal is to provide a fast track to a professional career in the growing retail Industry not only regionally but also globally.

It is also intended to prepare students to better market themselves in a competitive market.

The team at NWACC is comprised of four professionals with a combined experience in academia, advising, marketing, sales and retail. They are Vance, Kelley Rose, business faculty, Martin Harrell, academic advisor, and Patrice Whitley, marketing and recruitment coordinator.

“Team members are committed to both mentoring and developing dynamic future leaders in retail,” Vance said.
