Community leader Rey Hernandez joins NWACC Adult Ed

Rey Hernandez            ROGERS (Wednesday, August 29, 2007) – Reynaldo Hernandez joined the staff of Adult Education as an ESL Examiner. Rey, as he prefers to be called, is a long time resident of Northwest Arkansas having moved here in 1989.

            Rey and his wife Roselea, a native Arkansan from Newton County, both served in the Marine Corps and upon his retirement chose to return to Arkansas.

            Rey has been very active in education issues since arriving in northwest Arkansas and has been proactive in issues concerning Hispanics.

            Himself a child of immigrant parents grew up in El Paso, Texas and then completed his Associate of Arts degree while in the military at San Marcos, California.

            Before joining NWACC he was involved in several businesses.

            Rey helped start the first all Spanish Radio station in Arkansas, owned a Mexican restaurant, and owns the first Hispanic marketing company in the state.

            In the education arena he was involved early on concerning Title I issues in the schools and even started an ESL Summer program for youth and adults in Rogers through the Office of Human Concern.

            Lately, Rey has been involved with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) helping raise thousands of dollars in scholarship funds for deserving Latino students.  He serves as the Arkansas LULAC Deputy State Director for Young Adults.

            Recently, Rey determined to complete his own education and is presently enrolled at the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions.

            His current projects include an initiative to increase the Latino teachers in the local school districts and a small business incubator for fledgling ventures.

            He continues to do seminars for the Small Business Development Center on how to reach the Hispanic consumer and is also a contributing writer to the Adelante Arkansas bilingual magazine.
