NWACC Adult Ed bursting at seams

Ben Aldama            ROGERS (Wednesday, August 29, 2007) – The Adult Education program at NWACC is bursting at the seams.

It’s maxed out at its Rogers center and is teaching classes in the afternoon and evenings at public school buildings in Rogers, Gentry and Siloam Springs.

Program director Ben Aldama said the growth is due to word of mouth.

“Friends are telling their friends and their relatives,” he said. “Morning classes are already filled. There’s a waiting list for English As A Second Language (ESL).”

He said his teachers deliver quality instruction. There are five full-time and 17 part-time teachers.

“We have more teachers than ever before,” Aldama said. “We have a very caring, qualified staff.

“They’re very profession. For example, Saturday, August 18, we had a 6-hour professional development workshop for instructors and staff. Teachers did not mind giving up a Saturday because they care about their students.”

The program holds afternoon classes at three Rogers elementary schools and a middle school.

“We’re teaching the parents of elementary and middle school children,” Aldama said. Classes are in ESL.

NWACC has the largest ESL program in Arkansas.

The program opened its Gentry facility last week. It offers ESL and GED in the afternoon and evenings.

The program holds GED classes twice a week from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Siloam Springs High School.

The program added a third day-time GED instructor with two GED instructors at night.
