Student wins national SIM competition

BENTONVILLE (November 23, 2007) – NWACC is once again home of a worldwide business competition finalist, but this time a world champion who surpassed the accomplishments of her husband who placed fifth a year ago.

Christina F. Vaughn won the Management Simulations, Inc. (MSI), International Fall Foundation Challenge division with 776 points out of a possible 1,000 points. Her total was 156 points greater than the first runner up from the other side of the world in Sydney, Australia.

She is the first community college student in MSI Challenge history to take first-place honors.

Swango and Vaughn            After doing well in the Foundation simulation during instructor Greg Swango's course at NWACC, Vaughn (pictured right with Swango) decided to enter the global Foundation Challenge.

“The Business Simulation was exciting to play, and I never really thought I would do as well as I did,” said Vaughn, who will receive an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Administration after the spring 2009 semester and plans to transfer to work toward an accounting degree.

"It really helped me to understand all the numbers behind running a business."

The top six places of the fall MSI 2007 Foundation worldwide competition are:

  1.      NWACC, 776 points
  2.      University of Technology, Sydney, 620
  3.      Maharishi University of Management, 559
  4.      Drexel University, 522
  5.      University of Houston, 498
  6.      U-Mass Dartmouth, 495

A year ago NWACC student Ryan Vaughn finished fifth overall. Results were based on the high balanced scorecard points earned after completing eight rounds. A year ago, final places were determined by cumulative profit.

Both Christina and Ryan are students of NWACC's Accounting and Business Foundation instructor Greg Swango.

“Christina is Ryan’s wife and she is adamant about the fact that she has made all her own decisions,” Swango said.

“At the start of class this semester, Christy told me that Ryan taught her how to play the game, but that she was on her own and her team has gone on to dominate all three of my classes and now she not only qualifies as a finalist, but wins it all!”

Only the top six teams or individuals were invited to the finals out of 169 teams that registered for the Foundation competition.

The teams were determined by the high balanced scorecard points earned after completing eight rounds during the qualifying section of the competition.
