NWACC EAST EMPACTS, elementary 2nd grade
authors team up on project

BENTONVILLE (November 16, 207) – A team of NWACC (EAST/EMPACTS) students were involved today in a young author’s project at Russell Jones Elementary School in Rogers.

Students in Dr. Regina Ryel’s “Introduction to Education” course, worked collaboratively to facilitate in the publication of children’s creative text.

Elizabeth Cable, Wendy Bailey and Tera Daughtery (Elementary Education majors), designed and implemented a creative writing assignment for students in Mrs. Kim Staab’s 2nd grade classroom.

The NWACC team not only designed the activity, they also gave the children “one on one” instruction and guidance through the creative writing process.

The creative process began with the reading of fables to the children. The children were then encouraged to brainstorm about ideas for a writing project.

The children composed and illustrated their personal stories and the NWACC team used technology to help the students publish their illustrations and edit their text.

EAST             The EAST/EMPACTS team contacted a publishing firm to publish the student’s work. Russell Jones Elementary School and an anonymous donor provided the funding to publish the student work.

Each student read their story at the author’s celebration and received a bound copy of their books to take home and keep. Mrs. Pam Camper, Principal of Russell Jones Elementary, purchased a full set of the children’s books for the school library.

When the NWACC students were asked about their experience, Elizabeth Cable remarked, “It was a hands on, real life, experience that will make us all better teachers.”

“It gave us a very good idea of what to expect in a future classroom.” “Mrs. Staab was very helpful in her direction of our activity.”
