NWACC Kids College takes on new format: iJobs
BENTONVILLE (Monday, June 2, 2008) – The Kids’ College program at NorthWest Arkansas Community College takes on a new format this summer.
NWACC Corporate Learning will present “iJobs,” a new summer program for students entering grades 6-9. The new program focuses on career exploration.
The program will be held on the NWACC campus 8 a.m. to noon in Burns Hall during the week of July 28-August 1.
Careers explored will include:
• Law Enforcement/CSI
• Music
• Pediatrics/Nursing
• Veterinarian/Animal Training
In iJobs, teens and pre-teens select a career field that they would like to explore and then spend the week with professionals in their chosen field. The objectives for each course are the same and include building skills through hands-on experiences.
Other objectives include expanding a base of knowledge, discovering different career options within the field, learning how much training or education is needed, exploring salary ranges and job growth trends, examining career ladders and pathways and developing a career plan.
A limited number of seats are available.
The program was created for students with the involvement of students.
“In order to help our youth prepare and plan for their future, NWACC decided that a career exploration camp would be beneficial for kids entering junior high and high school,” said Dr. Derek Crews, Vice President for Workforce Development.
“To ensure the program met the needs and held the interest of this age group, NWACC enlisted the help of local eighth graders.”
Four eighth grade classes participated in focus groups in March 2008.
Students identified career fields they were interested in and then listed and prioritized what they most wanted to learn, which evolved into the program’s learning objectives.
The top 4 career fields of interest were selected for this year’s lineup. Students also submitted and voted on a name for the program.
The program name, iJobs, was one of the most popular names.
