Sporting big smiles, Gentry High School students Heath Alsip (left) and Justin Hill (right) were recognized at Honors Night on May 6, 2008, at the NWACC Regional Technology Center in Fayetteville. Alsip and Hill were Gold and Silver Medal winners in Aviation Maintenance Technology at the recent SkillsUSA state competition in Hot Springs. Both students were recipients of $30,000 scholarships to continue their aviation maintenance training and education.
RTC students earn $97,800 in scholarships
FAYETTEVILLE (Friday, May 9, 2008) – NorthWest Arkansas Community College Regional Technology Center students are the recipients of scholarships totaling $97,800. The awards were announced at an RTC Honors Night program to recognize students who have exhibited special skills in academic achievement, vocational performance, and other personal areas.
“This scholastic aid significantly aids our students in their academic and training pursuits,” said NWACC President Dr. Becky Paneitz.
Guest speaker Darrell Froud, operations manager for the Tyson Mexican Original Division and former student on this campus in the 1980s, congratulated students on their accomplishment, and challenged them to be persistent in their efforts in life.
Many of the students recognized participated in the recent statewide SkillsUSA competition in Hot Springs.
“SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force,” RTC Dean Paul Rehberg said. “It is designed to be run by students, for their own growth and benefit. SkillsUSA members develop into well-rounded people with technical, academic and employability skills that will help them get a job and have a successful career.”

Aviation Maintenance Technology
- Heath Alsip—Gentry HS-Gold Medal, SkillsUSA, $30,000 scholarship to WyoTech Technical School
- Justin Hill---Gentry HS-Silver Medal, SkillsUSA, $30,000 scholarship to WyoTech Technical School
Culinary Arts ProStart
- Thomas Bedward, Rogers HS, ProStart Gold Medal winner, Culinary Management segment, $750 Johnson & Wales University
- Kira Plummer, Fayetteville HS, ProStart Gold Medal winner, Culinary Management segment, ProStart Gold Medal winner, Culinary Management segment, $750 Johnson & Wales University
- Sparrow Taylor, Fayetteville HS, ProStart Gold Medal winner, Culinary Management segment, $750 Johnson & Wales University
- Jeremy Morris, Fayetteville HS, ProStart Gold Medal winner, Culinary Management segment, $750 Johnson & Wales University
Each ProStart medalist won a $6,000 scholarship to Sullivan University, Louisville Kentucky, the fourth largest culinary program in the U.S.
Skills USA Culinary
- Guadalupe Pena, Jr., Fayetteville HS, Silver Medal, Culinary 8 hour cook-off with written exam, $4,000 scholarship to Sullivan University, Louisville and $650 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University
- Jeremy Morris, Fayetteville HS, Bronze Medal, Food and Beverage, $4,000 scholarship to Sullivan University and $650 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University
Medical Professions
- Brittany Miller-Holloway, Fayetteville HS, Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, $500 scholarship
Welding
- Charles Henson, Greenland HS, Tulsa Welding Senior Contest, $500 scholarship to Tulsa Welding School
- Radlee Bien, Bentonville HS, Tulsa Welding Senior Contest, $500 scholarship to Tulsa Welding School
“It’s all about the students,” Rehberg said. “We are elated to be part of a program that helps deliver nearly $100,000 in scholarship money to students from so many high schools around Northwest Arkansas.”

The awards were presented May 6 at the RTC in Fayetteville. Refreshments were prepared by culinary students. Paneitz and other NWACC executives greeted students and their families.
