NWACC Honors Convocation Thursday, Commencement Friday, Pinning Saturday

BENTONVILLE (Wednesday, May 07, 2008) – NorthWest Arkansas Community College will celebrate the accomplishments of some of its most exceptional students at an Honors Convocation 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Wal-Mart Auditorium at the Shewmaker Center.

Faculty and staff will recognize more than 100 NWACC students for their academic achievements and service to the college and community.

Some of the many who will be recognized are:

  • Joyce Abrams, Distinguished Graduate, Class of 2008
  • Sheryl Slaughter, Golden Eagle BOT Scholarship Recipient
  • Janice Jordan, Gamma Beta Phi Outstanding Community Service; and

Timothy Payne and Li Mounce, Honors Program Graduates.

Others to be recognized are students graduating summa cum and magna cum laude, and outstanding graduates by department and degree.

Honor society members of Gamma Beta Phi, Phi Theta Kappa, and Sigma Kappa Delta, Student Ambassador Activities Board members, and Golden Eagle Award recipients will also be celebrated.
The Nursing Department will also recognize Cindy Kugel, RN, BS, MS, as the Outstanding Alumna in Nursing.

FRIDAY COMMENCEMENT
On Friday, NWACC’s 19th annual Commencement will be held 7 p.m. at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

Speaker is Paul Vitale, a native of Russellville who graduated from the University of Central Arkansas in 1995 with a degree in Mass Communications and Journalism. Vitale will speak on “A Hero Within.”

Three special presentations will be made by College President Dr. Becky Paneitz. Those are:

A posthumous Honorary Associate of Humanitarian Service Degree to NWACC founding Chairman Dr. Donald E. White. His family members will accept the award. NWACC will hold a short ceremony 5 p.m. Friday with the White family, unveiling a portrait of Dr. White in the auditorium that bears his name at Burns Hall.

The Dick Trammel Outstanding Alumni Award to Sue Ann Pekel, Children’s Librarian for the Bentonville Public Library. Pekel is responsible for developing the children’s collections and developing, promoting, and presenting library programs for children of all ages and their families. Prior to her time with the Bentonville Library, she worked nine years for the Rogers Public Library. She completed her Associate of Arts degree at NWACC, a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from John Brown University and a Masters in Library Science degree from Texas Women’s University.

The NWACC Distinguished Graduate award to Joyce Abrams. A 1986 graduate of Cushing, Okla., High School, she enrolled at NWACC last summer in the Homeland Security/Emergency Management program with the goal of becoming the first graduate in this program. She maintained the necessary balance between being a wife, mother, and pediatric nurse, attending classes full time each semester and completing an internship at the Shewmaker Center. She wrote courses for the Institute for Corporate and Public Safety to finish the requirements and receive her degree. She graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 in one year instead of the average two.

Abrams is one of 334 candidates for associate degrees and certificates.

The NWACC Brass Connection will provide Pre-Ceremony Music.

Dr. Linda Lovell, President of the NWACC Faculty Senate, will offer a greeting prior to the Processional.
Board of Trustees’ Vice Chair, Dr. Les Carnine, is the Grand Marshal and Bearer of the Mace for the Processional. The Parade of Flags represents the homes of NWACC students.

The NWACC Chamber Singers will lead the National Anthem.

PINNING CEREMONY

On Saturday, May 10, the Nursing Pinning Ceremony will be held 2 p.m. at the Church at Pinnacle Hills in Rogers. NWACC has 63 candidates for the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing.
