NWACC to observe Constitution Day Monday, Sept. 17
BENTONVILLE (Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007) – Dr. Mark R. Killenbeck will be the keynote speaker at NorthWest Arkansas Community College’s Constitution Day celebration noon Monday, Sept. 17, in the Trammel Student Center Room 108.
Killenbeck, author of McCullough v Maryland: Securing a Nation, will address the controversial case regarding the establishment of federal power.
The Wylie H. Davis Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas since 1998, Killenbeck has written numerous books, chapters, and articles, with a special focus on Constitutional history, affirmative action, diversity and federalism.
In addition to Killenbeck’s speech, NWACC faculty will conduct a number of activities and events aimed at increasing knowledge about the US Constitution, including videos, displays, handouts of the Constitution, and a quiz for students, staff and faculty.
“The United States Constitution has stood the test of time for 220 years and it is one of the greatest documents ever written,” Dr. Jerry Vervack, NWACC dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said.
“It is from the Constitution and its Amendments that the American people find the basis not only for their government, but also for the liberties and freedoms that perpetuate the American Dream.”
Constitution Day was ratified as a federal holiday in 2004, and is observed on the date the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
NWACC’s Constitution day program is sponsored by the NWACC Honors Program.
