NWACC ‘SEAS’ this spring

NWACC will celebrate its first themed semester in the Spring of 2009 with a focus on Southeast Asia. Our catchy title/theme, unless someone comes up with a better one, is "NWACC SEAS."

Each event will be tagged with the title and its theme.

For example, a roundtable on the Vietnam War may be called “NWACC SEAS History”; for a discussion of SEA literature, “NWACC SEAS Literature,” and so on.

Innovation grant monies will help pay for speakers and performers for the themed semester. We hope to utilize as many local resources as we can, however. So, we need your input and involvement.

Are you or do you know of anyone who has some expertise on any aspect of the region?
Are you or do you know someone from Southeast Asia who may want to participate?
Do you have an idea about a potential event or creative way to incorporate the theme into your curriculum?

Dale Montgomery, Viviana Pagan, Lou Lo, the International Education Committee, and April Brown have discussed some possible activities. Some of our ideas include:
1. An international student roundtable
2. A faculty roundtable
3. A film series
4. Speakers (those with expertise on the art of the region, religion, history, economics, etc.)
5. A performance by a well-known Hmong comedian
6. The creation of a mandala
7. An end of the semester gala - "NWACC SEAS Culture Night" with food, a fashion show, and performers.

Finally, we are asking all faculty to try to incorporate some aspect of SE Asia into your curriculum in the Spring. A geography class could spend a little more time on that part of the world, a U.S. history course could spend a little more time on the Hmong view of the Vietnam War, a world literature course could spend additional time on that region’s lit, etc.

The countries that make up SE Asia are: Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Brunei. The main religions are: Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity.

If you would like to help in any way, please contact April, Dale, Viviana, or Lou. We welcome your ideas and assistance
