NWACC activates Emergency Text Messaging System

BENTONVILLE (Tuesday, July 8, 2008) – NorthWest Arkansas Community College on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, rolled out an Emergency Text Message System designed to notify the NWACC community of emergency situations and campus closing announcements.

“When you register for the service, you will receive timely text message alerts directly to your text enabled cell phone,” said Steve Pelphrey, NWACC Executive Director for Risk Management, Compliance and Ethics. “The service is designed to get this information to you in a quick and timely manner.”

College personnel began distributing to students and employees a flyer (attached) with information on signing up. Other than charges a person would normally incur for receiving a text message, there is no charge from NWACC to persons using this service.

“By offering this service hopefully we will be better able to inform students and employees of emergency situations on our campus and at our centers,” Pelphrey said.

Sign up is voluntary, he said.

“Our admissions and advisors will let students know about the service and how to access the sign up sheet,” Pelphrey said.

The link to the sign up page on My NWACC Connection and the NWACC home page went live Tuesday, and students and employees can begin signing up for the service.

Students, faculty and staff that sign up for the service can be assured that NWACC will use the system only for emergency and campus closing alerts and occasional testing of the system, Pelphrey said.
