The Assignment Tool

The following is a transcription of the WebCT Orientation Video "The Assignment Tool ."

Segment 4 – The Assignment Tool

WebCT also includes a place where you can read assignment instructions, send your completed assignments to your teacher, and receive feedback about your work.  This is called the Assignment Tool, or the Assignment Dropbox.

Let’s look at this tool now.  Remember, your course may look different from this one, and your teacher may or may not use this feature of WebCT.  The Assignment tool may also be labeled something different or use a different icon than what you see here, so be sure to ask your teacher if you cannot locate it.

When you click on the Assignment tool, it will open up to show a list of assignments.  Here we see only two assignments, but your class will most likely include more.

You can see several things about the assignments here.  First is the title of the assignment, for example, Assignment 1.  You will notice next to Assignment 1 is a little pencil icon, which shows that the assignment is available.  As you can see, Assignment 2 has no pencil icon next to it, meaning that it is not yet available.  On this page you can also see the availability dates for each assignment, the number of points the assignment is worth, and if it has already been submitted.

To access the actual assignment, you should click on the title of the assignment.  Here you will see the instructions your teacher has given for the assignment, and the due date.  Some assignments may also have a file attached to them, which you can view by clicking on the filename.

To submit an assignment to your instructor, you will need to complete and save the assignment in whatever format your teacher specifies – usually a Microsoft Word document, a spreadsheet or some other common file type.  Then use the Upload file button and the Browse button to locate the file you wish to submit. Select the file, click on Open, and then use the Upload button.  Your file will now appear on the lower portion of the screen.  [Repeat this Upload process if you need to attach more than one file.] You must also click on the Submit Assignment button to send it to your teacher.

After your instructor grades your assignment, you will be able to return here to see your grade and any feedback comments your teacher made on your work.  Your grade will also appear under the My Grades icon, which is usually located on the course homepage.

It is very important that you keep track of the due dates for the assignments in your online course, since you will not have the oral reminders that are given out in a face-to-face class.  It is a good idea to write the due dates on a calendar in your office, at home, or use some other type of reminder system.  Remember, each instructor is different on the amount of flexibility given on due dates, but it is always the student’s responsibility to get assignments submitted on time.

This is the end of the section on the Assignment tool.  Please continue to the next segment about the WebCT Quiz tool.
