Mathematics Courses
ACSK 0013 Prealgebra - (F, S, SUM). This course builds a strong number
sense by emphasizing integers, decimals, percent, fractions, ratio and proportion.
It also prepares a student to move forward with confidence into a first developmental
algebra course by introducing variables, evaluating variable expressions and solving
first degree equations. Elementary geometry, reading graphs, critical thinking, and
problem solving skills support the AMATYC and NCTM standards. Some calculator use
is incorporated. Upon successful completion, a student may take Beginning Algebra.
No prerequisite.
ACSK 0023 Beginning Algebra - (F, S, SUM). This developmental algebra
course covers a quick prealgebra review; solving linear equations and inequalities,
quadratic equations, and rational equations; graphing lines in the Cartesian coordinate
plane; working with exponential properties, polynomial operations, factoring, and
rational operations, and emphasizing interwoven problem solving. Upon successful
completion, a student may take ACSK 0103, Intermediate Algebra or MATH 1003, Math
for AAS General Education. PREREQUISITE: Prealgebra (ACSK 0013) with a grade of C
or better, or minimum placement score: COMPASS Prealgebra-39, ASSET Numerical Score-
40, or ACT Math-14. Prealgebra background is strongly recommended.
ACSK 0103 Intermediate Algebra - (F, S, SUM). This developmental algebra
course covers a quick beginning algebra review; solving systems of linear equations,
inequalities in one variable, and radical, quadratic, rational equations; graphing
lines, linear inequalities, and parabolas; working with function notation and radical
expressions; and interwoven problem solving. Some graphing calculator lessons are
included. Upon successful completion, a student may take MATH 1204, College Algebra
or MATH 2043, Survey of College Mathematics. PREREQUISITE: Beginning Algebra (ACSK 0023)
with a grade of C or better, or minimum placement score: COMPASS Prealgebra-39 & Algebra
41, ASSET Numerical Skills- 40 & Elementary Algebra- 43, or ACT Math-17. Beginning
algebra background is necessary.
ACSK 0104 Foundations of Algebra - (F, S). A combined beginning and
intermediate algebra course, computer-based and preparing for college-level mathematics
by identifying and supporting the student's need in beginning algebra skill development
as well as covering intermediate algebra material. The course extends to radical
variable expressions and equations; solving quadratic equations and systems of linear
equations; function notation and graphing lines, parabolas and linear inequalities
in two variables, and problem solving techniques. Internet access from home is required.
PREREQUISITE: Recent completion of Prealgebra (ACSK 0013) with an A, or minimum placement
score: COMPASS: Prealgebra-39 & Algebra-35, ASSET Numerical Skills - 40 & Elementary
Algebra-36, or ACT Math-15. Some algebra background is required.
