Journal Essay # 8 - Relationships and Diversity

                 Spring 2004

While I was growing up, my families view on race and ethnicity was that everyone is equal.   I was taught that just because someone has a different skin color or background, does not make them any less of a person.   It usually makes the individual more interesting, especially if they come from a different culture.

There are many differences that I see between my classmates and me.   We all have completely different backgrounds.   I was raised in Arkansas all my life, while some of my class mates were raised in other states and regions from all over the country.   Another difference is that some of my classmates are married and some are not.   Some of my classmates have children and some do not.   There are so many differences that I could not even come close to listing all of them.   Our class is a very small college class, yet it is full of diversity.

I do not find the race and ethical differences to be difficult for me.   I actually never have had any problems with it.   Usually, I find individuals of another race to be sometimes more interesting because they're not so much like me.   I feel that if we were all from the same background and looked a like, then this world would be quite dull.

I feel that diversity amongst people is a very good thing.   I think it helps us to become stronger as a society.   I believe that the reason the United States is such a great place to live is because of the large amounts of diversity it has.   In this country every day, I get to meet new people from all walks of life. I think diversity makes the human race stronger.
